Call for applications: Discovery and Metadata Expert Group

The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) Discovery and Metadata Expert Group (DMEG) is seeking applications for new members and a co-chair, for a 2-year renewable term beginning September 1, 2024. This is an excellent opportunity to help set national-level discovery and metadata priorities and to advocate for and advance data stewardship best practices in Canada.

 

About the DMEG

The DMEG sits within the larger Alliance Research Data Management (RDM) Network of Experts and serves as a community of practice and advisory group that works to support data creators, curators and other professionals in planning, producing, managing and disseminating descriptive metadata to enable the effective discovery and reuse of research data across a wide range of disciplines. DMEG offers members a supportive forum for discussion and information sharing around discovery-related topics and tools and the ability to contribute to group activities and the development of shared resources, goals and objectives.

Members

The DMEG welcomes active participation from early career to seasoned professionals engaged in planning, producing, managing and disseminating descriptive metadata to enable the effective discovery and reuse of research data. The DMEG offers members a supportive forum for discussion and information sharing around topics and tools, presentations from guest speakers, events and workshops, and the ability to contribute to group activities and the development of shared goals and objectives.

Please submit your application through the expression of interest form. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and will remain open until September 1, 2024.

Co-chair position

Co-chairs of the DMEG advise on and contribute to the planning and development of discovery and metadata-related initiatives in Canada and serve on the Network of Experts Council of Chairs.

Current responsibilities for the DMEG co-chairs:

  • Advise on and contribute to the planning and development of DMEG-related initiatives in Canada.
  • Identify and prioritize resources or supports required to advance the work of the DMEG, for example, oversee the creation of a Working Group to advance a particular EG initiative.
  • Serve as the DMEG liaison to the larger Network of Experts Council of Chairs. Report on DMEG activities and identify areas for collaboration or potential synergies with other Expert Groups.
  • Engage with other stakeholders in the DRI ecosystem, such as representatives of other Expert Groups, representatives from research software and advanced research computing, or Tri-Agency representatives, on topics of mutual interest.
  • Chair monthly DMEG meetings.
  • Participate in various meetings such as DMEG planning meetings with co-chairs and Alliance Product Lead, Discovery Services to set DMEG agenda; quarterly meetings with the larger Network of Experts Council of Chairs to support the integrated operation of the Network of Experts; quarterly meetings with the larger Network of Experts membership.

There is some flexibility in position responsibilities and meeting frequency and opportunities to shape the direction of the DMEG with input from co-chairs and Expert Group membership. 

Please be advised that this is a volunteer position with an estimated time commitment of 5–10 hours per month. While we strive to create bilingual resources and training opportunities, DMEG meetings are currently conducted in English.

We welcome nominations from individuals who are engaged in discovery and metadata-related activities within their organization. If you would like to put your name forward for consideration, please submit your application through the expression of interest form and indicate your interest in the co-chair position in the text of your response. Nominations received before September 1, 2024, will receive full consideration. 

Proposed projects request

For both membership and co-chair applicants, DMEG encourages submitting new discovery and/or metadata project ideas in addition to your application. Please include any project proposals in your application.
