Canada’s federal granting agencies — the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently announced the initial funding opportunities that will require applicants to submit data management plans (DMPs), per the Tri-Agency Research Data Management (RDM) Policy.
The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) offers several resources to help researchers comply with the policy and follow best practices in data management planning:
-
DMP Assistant: The DMP Assistant is a national, online, bilingual data management planning tool developed by the Alliance in collaboration with host institution University of Alberta to assist researchers in preparing DMPs. This tool is freely available to all researchers and develops a DMP through a series of key data management questions, supported by best-practice guidance and examples.
-
DMP templates and exemplars: DMP templates and exemplars highlight best practices for DMPs in a range of disciplines and research methods and provide guidance on specific aspects of creating a DMP.

Many of these resources were created by the Alliance Data Management Planning Expert Group, which works to promote and nurture a strong data culture in Canada, and to support researchers and institutions in their data management planning needs.
