Abstract
On March 15, 2021, the Tri-Agency Research Data Management (RDM) Policy was launched. In preparation for the requirements set out in the policy, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) Research Intelligence Expert Group conducted a survey of all Canadian research institutions to determine challenges and successes in developing institutional strategies for RDM.
In this lunch and learn, Alexandra Cooper, Lucia Costanzo and Matthew Lucas we will present the results from the Institutional RDM Strategy Survey, summarize the state of institutional strategy development across Canada, and discuss how the survey will help to inform the creation of new resources to support Canadian institutions in developing RDM strategies.

Alexandra Cooper, Data Services Coordinator, Data Services, Queen’s University Library
Alexandra Cooper is the Data Services Coordinator at Queen’s University providing RDM and data reference support to students, faculty, staff and researchers. She is chair of the Alliance Research Intelligence Expert Group and a member of the Dataverse North Expert Group. Alexandra is also chair of Statistics Canada’s Data Liberation Initiative Professional Development Committee.
Lucia Costanzo, Research Intelligence and Assessment Coordinator, Digital Research Alliance of Canada
At Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) as the Research Intelligence and Assessment Coordinator, Lucia coordinated the activities of the Research Intelligence Expert Group which included informing and advising the Alliance RDM Team and Alliance management on emerging developments and directions both nationally and internationally in RDM and broader Digital Research Infrastructure ecosystems. She was on a secondment from the University of Guelph where, she actively supported, enabled, and contributed to the learning and research process on campus for over twenty years. Through instruction, consultations, and outreach, she guided students and researchers on the responsible handling and organization of data created during the many phases of a research project. As of July 5, Lucia will return to the University of Guelph Library as a Research and Scholarship Librarian focusing on RDM.
Matthew Lucas, Executive Director, Corporate Strategy and Performance, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Matthew Lucas joined the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in September 2015 as the Executive Director, Corporate Strategy and Performance, and has a background in the area of science, technology and innovation policy. Prior to SSHRC, Matthew worked at Industry Canada where he held different positions, including Senior Policy Advisor to the Science, Technology and Innovation Council Secretariat, and the Departmental Advisor to the Minister of State for Science and Technology. Matthew received his PhD from the University of Toronto.
